Microsoft aptly calls this imitation DOS the "Command Prompt." In pre-XP versions there were options on the shut down menu to either run DOS with Windows pure MS-DOS. About the ms-dos prompt....
You should have a button or choice from the start menu of ~"command prompt" or "Run" or something along those lines. If you just have "Run" then one of two possibilities will work, either type in "command" or "cmd" and hit return. Ok, you should be at something that looks a lot like the old DOS prompt.
